    Uninformed South Africans lack defences against parasites

    A few years ago, the Chief of Pathobiology at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in America said, “We have a tremendous worldwide parasite problem – it's just not being identified”.     Conventional medicine fails to detect most parasites

    Despite its epidemic proportions, parasitic infection continues to be overlooked by many physicians as a basis for illness, even at the height of acute parasitic infection. A report on ABC World News Tonight exposed the medical profession's widespread failure to detect parasitic infection.

    Misdiagnosis sometimes leads to prescribing powerful drugs that can depress the immune system, while they miss attacking the real culprits. Debilitating symptoms suffered by millions of people can now often be traced to previously unsuspected parasitic infection.

    In a recent study of over 400 Chronic Fatigue Immune Deficiency Syndrome (CFIDS) patients, parasitologists discovered that an incredible 93% had some form of parasitic infestation!

    Dr. Leo Galland suggests that “every patient with disorders of immune function, including multiple allergies (especially food allergies) and patients with unexplained fatigue or with chronic bowel symptoms, should be evaluated for the presence of intestinal parasites.”

    But old-fashioned, still-current medical techniques like ordinary “stool tests” often produce false negatives. One reason is that many parasites reside in the blood, tissue or intestinal tract lining – and are not revealed in random stool samples.     Did you know that your brain is 60% fat? And that DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid predominantly found in fish, is one of the most abundant types of fat in this crucial organ?

    Without this essential fatty acid, human life is hardly possible. DHA is abundant in neural tissues, important in terms of cognitive and visual function, and forms an integral part of the membranes of all the body's cells - including the cells of the brain.

    If you're still not eating fish at least two times a week, read on. This article might convince you to stock up on the tuna and book that long overdue fishing trip.

    Fatty acids explained
    Let's first gloss over the basics:

    Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are classified into two groups: the omega-3 fatty acids and the omega-6 fatty acids. These fats all fall into the category of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, or PUFAs (vs. saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids).

    While both the omega-3s and the omega-6s need to be included in the diet, we tend to eat more omega-6 fatty acids, and less omega-3 fatty acids, than we should. So, the general recommendation is to try to include more omega-3 fatty acids in the diet.

    There are basically three omega-3 fatty acids to take note of: alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and DHA.

    Flaxseed is the richest source of ALA, which can be converted in the body to EPA and DHA. Fatty marine fish, such as salmon, tuna and mackerel, are rich in the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA.

    Although the brain needs a constant supply of EFAs throughout life, the two most sensitive periods are infancy and ageing.

    Fatty acids and child development
    A study conducted in 1992 reported that breastfed children had an 8,3 percent advantage in terms of IQ when they reached the ages of seven and eight.

    This made researchers start to think that breastfeeding might have an impact on cognitive ability. They also started to wonder whether the omega-3 fatty acids in breast milk could be linked to this phenomenon.

    More research followed and other positive results emerged.

    Research showed that maternal omega-3 intake was critical for the development of the growing foetus and a landmark UK study indicated that Britain's mental health crisis could be tied to a 50-year decline in fish consumption.

    A local study, conducted by the MRC, pointed to the importance of supplementing the diet with DHA prior to conception and during pregnancy. The study showed that a child born to a mother with a good DHA status is more advanced in terms of cognitive development at 18 months.

    Research conducted in 2003 by the University of Stellenbosch showed that a fish flour-based spread, served with bread, possibly affected the learning and memory abilities of the primary-school children who participated in the study.

    Fatty acids, ageing and dementia
    From the above, it's clear that EFAs play an important role early in life. But dietary intake of these fatty acids also becomes increasingly important as we get older.

    As we age, essential fatty acid deficiency can accelerate mental deterioration, according to Prof Nola Dippenaar, founder and owner of Health Insight, a company that consults to companies and individuals on the physiology and biochemistry of the human body.

    "EFAs play a significant role in brain structure by determining membrane fluidity, while also contributing significantly to brain function," Dippenaar says.

    She emphasises the fact that cell membranes aren't structures, but liquids, and that greater fluidity of the membranes improves the function of cells � also in the brain. This fluidity is thanks to the fatty acids that are incorporated in the cell membranes.

    Although the brain has the ability to produce some of the long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) by itself, this process is limited and becomes even more limited as we age. So, as we grow older, more of these fatty acids should come from the diet.

    The age-related decrease in the brain's essential fatty acid levels affects different parts of the brain in different ways. Unfortunately, the areas involved in memory and learning seem to be the first to suffer.

    In terms of cell-membrane composition, the brain's cells respond to the omega-6 and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid levels in the diet. The cells are particularly sensitive to the omega-3/omega-6 ratio.

    Experts agree that by ensuring an adequate intake of the PUFAs as we age, the onset of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, can possibly be delayed or even prevented.

    Recent studies have found that DHA, the fatty acid found in fish, has a particularly important role to play in terms of memory � giving us another good reason to ensure the adequate intake of this food throughout life.

    Over one thousand Chinese infants are still in hospital receiving treatment for kidney damage caused by tainted milk, China's Health Ministry said on Thursday, more than two months after the scandal broke.

    A total 50 741 children have recovered and been discharged, since news that many dairy products were contaminated with an industrial chemical sent parents rushing for check-ups.

    Four children died from problems caused by melamine and there was a global panic as products including sweets, biscuits and ice-cream were found to be contaminated.

    US banned Chinese food imports
    The scandal fuelled domestic fears about the food safety and dented the "Made in China" brand at a time of global slowdown and sluggish exports. The United States has since banned all imports of Chinese food products unless they are certified either free of diary or free of melamine.

    The white powder was added to watered down milk because it mimics protein in some quality tests, and has since shown up in eggs because it was added to animal feed for the same reason. It is normally used in making plastics including floor tiles, whiteboards and kitchenware.

    Door-to-door screening of more than 307 000 Beijing families with children under the age of three found that over 75 000 babies had been fed contaminated milk formula, the official Xinhua news agency said. � (Reuters Health, November 2008)

    Whether you're into leisurely cycling with the family, or rough routes for mountain bikes, South Africa has no shortage of truly beautiful places in which to do this.

    Joining the chain gang is as easy as buying a bike and pedaling off into the sunset. There is the getting fit part, but you'll be having so much fun, you'll breeze through this.

    That said, you may need a refresher (let's not say crash!) course before setting off on your first off-road mission.

    Mountain-biking (MTB) technology has advanced by leaps and bounds and these days you'll find bikes featuring mod cons such as front suspension, clickshift gears, intelligent drive trains and predictive rear shocks that are able to ''sense'' the terrain.

    Walk into a cycle shop and you'll be confronted by a range of bicycles varying in price from less than R1 000 to well over R50 000. It's a matter of horses for courses - so decide where and at what level you want to ride before handing over your cash.

    In search of the holy trail

    South Africa boasts a host of riding regions with anything from desert cranking and deep-forest riding to leisurely coastal cruises. Official trails are usually graded according to the level of difficulty - green means ''easy'', blue ''moderate'', red ''difficult'' and black ''extreme''.

    When grading a route trail owners and riders consider the duration of the ride, accumulated climb, total distance and terrain. Ride with respect not only for other trail users but also for the environment.

    Avoid hard braking and skidding as this causes erosion and damages the trail. Slow down when you see hikers or animals because they have right of way in the great outdoors. Always arrange access, pay for permits, stick to the marked trail and don't litter or damage anything.

    We chose these trails from the many brilliant rides in South Africa. It may not be a definitive guide but each route is special in its own way, there are options to suit novices and pros and also one route abroad.

    Rule No 1: Wear a helmet
    No helmet, no ride. A good helmet is, after your bike, your most important MTB purchase. If it doesn't fit snugly it won't keep your cranium intact. And make sure there are plenty of air vents to keep your head cool. An internationally recognised impact rating (check for CE/EN, ANSI or CPSC figures) is a must, while an adjustable sun visor is a major bonus.

    1. Golden Gate Highlands National Park, Free State

    Grading: You're riding on tarmac roads within the park, making this an easy ride.
    How fit should you be? Even for couch potatoes.
    Where? This dramatic national park is in the Maloti range of the Eastern Free State, 14 km along the R712 from Clarens.
    Why ride it? You'll feel as if you're cruising with your head in the clouds while you ogle eland, zebra and other animals on the grassy slopes.
    Distance: Less than 20 km if you stick to the tarmac roads in the park but the climbs are steep and numerous other riding options beckon in the area.
    Route description: For a tarmac cruise from Clarens cycle along the R712 towards Golden Gate (13,4 km), then turn right onto Blesbok Loop after 2 km. This 7 km one-way loop climbs steeply into eland country, offering panoramic views and a skittish switchback downhill back onto the R712. Hit a sharp left almost immediately to explore the Oribi Loop, a bonus 4 km or so of highland cranking. From here it is a speedy 22,5 km cruise back into Clarens.
    Maps and markings: Maps are available at the park offices where you buy your permits.
    Access: All roads are public access but you need to pay a park entrance fee. Entry free to Wild Card holders.

    2. Augrabies National Park, Northern Cape

    Grading: The surface is good and the riding is relatively flat.
    How fit should you be? If you can cycle around the block you should test-drive this one.
    Where? Along the Orange River, about 120 km west of Upington and just shy of 40 km along the R359 branching off the N14.
    Why ride it? This is the ultimate family ride with gently undulating gravel roads, galloping giraffes and endless views across the lunar landscape. Don't do it at midday in the height of summer though!
    Distance: If you cycle into every little turn-off, including the viewpoints across the Augrabies Gorge, you'll clock around 36 km on your bike computer.
    Route description: Go on the dirt road from Augrabies Main Camp, sticking to the gravel park roads winding past Moon Rock along the edge of the spectacular gorge. Include the side roads to Ararat, Oranjekom, Echo Corner and Fonteintjie to take in the exquisite views unfolding across the canyon. Neither gradient nor road surface will push you too much along this ride but nothing stops you from exploring the river beds.
    Maps and markings: You'll get a map at the park gate when you pay for your entrance permit. Free entry to Wild Card holders.
    Access: Day visitors may bring their own bikes; there may also be bikes available for hire at the main camp.

    3. Harkerville Trail, Garden Route

    Grading: Bring the family because the various routes range from a gentle cruise for the kids to white-knuckle runs for the big guns.
    How fit should you be? If you've survived a 6-8 km Sunday afternoon cycling trip with the family you can tackle this route.

    Diabetics mentally slower?

    Study shows that the speed at which the brain processes information appears to be the most severely impaired in people with type 2 diabetes.

    Findings from several studies have linked type 2 diabetes with cognitive dysfunction. However, it was unclear which cognitive processes were most affected, and how undiagnosed diabetes and abnormal blood glucose (sugar) levels influenced cognitive performance.

    To investigate, researchers analysed data from 1 917 elderly men and women enrolled in the Ages Reykjavik Study - a large population-based study that ran from 2002 to 2006. The Ages study explored genetic and other risk factors for a variety of age-related conditions including cognitive impairment.

    The study subjects, who did not have dementia, included 955 non-diabetic individuals, 744 with impaired fasting glucose (a precursor to full blown diabetes), 163 with diagnosed diabetes, and 55 with undiagnosed diabetes.

    Studies show diabetics are 'slower'
    A battery of brain function tests revealed that patients with diagnosed diabetes had significantly slower mental processing speed, compared to nondiabetic subjects, Dr Jane S. Saczynski, from the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester, and colleagues report in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

    Memory performance and "executive function" - the ability to plan, schedule, and multi-task - were comparable in the two groups, except for those who had diabetes for 15 years or longer, for whom significantly poorer executive function was also observed.

    For those with undiagnosed diabetes, both processing speed and memory performance were significantly worse relative to their non-diabetic peers.

    For patients with impaired fasting glucose (pre-diabetes), cognitive performance in all three areas was on par with that seen in non-diabetic subjects.

    "Given the increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes in older adults and the complexity of disease management in these high-risk individuals, future treatment protocols should be developed with the cognitive status of patients with type 2 diabetes in mind," the research team concludes. � (Reuters Health, November 2008)

    Vitamins fail cancer test
    Vitamin C or E pills do not help prevent cancer in men, concludes the same big study that last week found these supplements ineffective for warding off heart disease.

    The public has been hit by good and bad news about vitamins, much of it from test-tube or animal studies and hyped manufacturer claims. Even when researchers compare people's diets and find that a vitamin seems to help, the benefit may not translate when that nutrient is obtained a different way, such as a pill.

    "Antioxidants, which include vitamin C and vitamin E, have been shown as a group to have potential benefit," but have not been tested individually for a long enough time to know, said Howard Sesso of Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

    The Physicians Health Study, which he helped lead, was designed to do that. It involved 14 641 male doctors, 50 or older, including 1 274 who had cancer when or before the study started in 1997. They were included so scientists could see whether the vitamins could prevent a second cancer.

    Vit E had no affect on cancer outcome
    Participants were put into four groups and given vitamin E, vitamin C, both, or dummy pills. The dose of E was 400 international units every other day; C was 500 milligrams daily.

    After an average of eight years, there were 1 929 cases of cancer, including 1 013 cases of prostate cancer, which many had hoped vitamin E would prevent.

    However, rates of prostate cancer and of total cancer were similar among all four groups.

    The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and several vitamin makers. Results were being reported Sunday at an American Association for Cancer Research conference in Washington.

    "Well-conducted clinical trials such as this are rapidly closing the door on the hope that common vitamin supplements may protect against cancer," said Marji McCullough, nutrition chief at the American Cancer Society. "It's still possible that some benefit exists for subgroups that couldn't be measured, but the overall results are certainly discouraging.

    Cancer Society recommends healthy diet
    "The American Cancer Society recommends getting these and other nutrients by eating a mostly plant-based diet with a variety of vegetables, fruits and whole grains. A bonus is that this type of diet helps to prevent obesity, which increases the risk of several cancers."

    About 12% of Americans take supplements of C and E. The new study does not mean these vitamins have no value, just that they didn't prevent cancer in this group of doctors, who may be healthier than the general population, said Dr Peter Shields, deputy director of Georgetown University's Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Centre.

    The best bet, he said, is to do things that are known to prevent the disease - eat right, maintain a healthy weight, and exercise. � (Sapa)

    Sleep, exercises cuts cancer risk
    Regular physical activity can significantly lower a woman's risk of developing cancer, but skimping on sleep can eliminate those gains, a study has found.

    In a long-term study of nearly 6 000 US women, researchers found that those who exercised the most had a 25% lower chance of developing cancer than those who were the least active. But among younger, physically active women, those who slept less than seven hours a night had a 47% higher risk of being diagnosed with cancer than those who regularly got a good night's rest.

    "Greater participation in physical activity has consistently been associated with reduced risk of cancer incidence at several sites, including breast and colon cancers," said James McClain, a cancer prevention fellow at the National Cancer Institute and lead author of the study.

    Lack of sleep ups heart risks too
    "Short duration sleep appears to have opposing effects of physical activity on several key hormonal and metabolic parameters, which is why we looked at how it affected the exercise/cancer risk relationship."

    It is not yet known exactly why exercise reduces cancer risks, but researchers believe it could be due to the lower body weight, improved immune function and hormone levels associated with regular physical activity. Insufficient sleep has been linked to high risks of developing a number of conditions including heart disease, obesity and diabetes but, again, researchers have not determined exactly how sleep prevents disease.

    Superbugs stalk hospitals
    Headlines about hospital superbugs have focussed overwhelmingly on bacteria called MRSA, for methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), but a different pathogen, Acinetobacter baumannii, is an expanding threat and controlling outbreaks of it are proving extremely difficult, said the study, published in the British medical journal The Lancet.

    Nearly a third of cases involving infection by A. baumannii have shown resistance to frontline antibiotics, it said, citing research data. "Institutional outbreaks caused by multidrug resistant strains are a growing public health problem," said co-authors Drosos Karageorgopoulos and Matthew Falagas of the Alfa Institute of Biomedical Sciences in Athens.

    According to a 2004 study of 24 000 US cases, 34% of patients whose bloodstream became infected by A. baumannii while in hospital eventually died, a figure that rose to 43% among those in intensive care, they said.

    Urgent measures must be taken to prevent outbreaks in healthcare facilities, and to identify which drugs, and drug combinations, are the most effective in neutralising the bacteria, they warned. A. baumannii rarely attacks healthy individuals, and is more frequently found among critically ill hospital patients.

    Stricter hygiene practices needed
    Conditions which favour the superbug are advanced age, serious underlying diseases, weakened immune systems, along with major trauma and burns. Patients who have undergone surgery or are fitted with catheters are also more vulnerable to infection, along with persons breathing with the help of mechanical ventilation.

    Symptoms include pneumonia and bacteria in the blood, as well as infection of surgical sites and the urinary tract. The new study reviews different options for controlling and treating infections.

    Stricter hygiene practices - sterilisation of reusable medical equipment, hand washing, limiting physical contact - are essential, the researchers say. They also review the panoply of antibiotics available.

    Long regarded as the "agents of choice," a category of treatment called carbapenems has shown much higher rates of resistance in recent years. Other antibiotic groups - polymyxins and minocyclines - have been shown to be more effective. � (Sapa, November 2008)

    Healthy Christmas presents to give yourself

    Everyone is always frantic at this time of the year to find the right presents for the extended family that is descending on you for Christmas Day celebrations. But what are you going to be giving yourself?

    The good news is that what you can give yourself needn't cost a lot of money.

    Stop smoking. Yes, this is difficult, but think of this � no more smelly car, no more smelly hair, no more smelly breath, the nicest seats in restaurants and no more frantic chewing of peppermints before you dare to kiss anyone. Do whatever it takes � talk to your GP about taking anti-depressants for a short while to help you over this. The long term health benefits are immeasurable.

    Get a water filter. Our tap water isn't too bad, but why settle for not too bad? Get a water filter and attach it to the kitchen tap. You'll save a fortune in bottled water.

    Join a walking club. OK, so exercise and gyms may not be your thing. A walking club caters for people of every level of fitness (or lack therof). It is structured, cheap and there is usually a professional who can answer your questions.

    Let go of what is bugging you. If you've been obsessing about someone else's problem � drinking, drugging, relationships, whatever, accept that loving someone doesn't always mean shouldering their every problem. People need to learn to take care of themselves and allowing them to do that is often the most loving thing you can do.

    Go for a checkup. Many serious conditions have no symptoms, for example hypertension and high cholesterol � have yourself tested and go for a thorough checkup.

    Watch less TV. Slouching in front of the TV for hours on end is not good for your posture and it's not good for your mind. Decide on the weekend which programmes you would like to see during the week, and stick to it. Don't get yourself into a situation where you carry on watching low quality programmes, because it's too much trouble to get up, switch off and get moving.

    Learn to forgive. Life is unfair and people can be unjust and yes, you could have been at the receiving end of some of this. If you've been pouring energy into a bottomless pit of revenge fantasies, the only one suffering is you. If you forgive people, they no longer have a hold on you.

    Drink more water. A lot of people who are fatigued and depressed are, in fact, suffering from dehydration. Make it a habit to drink a glass of water for every cup of tea or coffee you drink and another one for every glass of wine or beer.

    Go for marriage counselling. Every partnership needs a service every now and then. You wouldn't drive your car until the engine groans and black smoke belches from the exhaust, would you? Marriage counselling sorts out many problems before they become too big to handle.

    Learn to de-stress. There is an art to this and it can be learnt. Whether you choose yoga or T'ai Chi or meditation or a regular massage or breathing exercises remains your choice. Just find something that works for you.

    Learn to say no. You are your own first priority and you have to look after yourself first before you can care for others. If you say yes to someone when you don't have the time or the energy, you will end up resenting them and yourself, for not being able to say no.

    Take time out. Everyone needs this. But if you don't build this into your programme , it just won't happen. Make time every day � even if it is for half an hour � to do something you enjoy � whether it is reading, talking to a friend on the telephone or pottering in the garden.

    Cardio training?

    Welcome back to another edition of Lean Body Fitness Secrets Ezine.

    Today, I have an intriguing discussion about cardio training, which will hopefully get you thinking differently, and trying new things.

    You may know I've been called the anti-cardio guy before, but this week I'm back posing the question to you... Do you really need cardio training to get lean and in great shape? By the way, you'll see in a minute that I'm not really "anti-cardio", just "anti traditional cardio".

    Most fitness buffs, weekend warriors, or anyone trying to get in shape or lose body fat, consider it a "fact" that they need "cardio" exercise to accomplish these goals. They would never even question it. However, I'm not only questioning it, I'm going to refute it!

    In fact, you may be surprised to know that some of the leanest and meanest people I know (men and women), NEVER do any type of normal or traditional cardio. And I've spent over 15 years working out in various gyms, and hanging out with athletes of all sorts, so I've seen it all. I will say that there can be a place for low-moderate level cardio for really overweight or deconditioned people, but even in those cases, there can be more effective methods.

    Whenever someone comes up to me at the gym and asks me how much cardio they should do to lose more body fat, my answer is always... NONE!!! You should see the crazy looks I get...it's priceless!

    But the fact is, just like the lean people I mentioned above that never do cardio, I personally haven't done what most people would consider "cardio" in years. Heck, I can't even remember the last time I "jogged" on the treadmill, or glided away on an elliptical, or pedaled away going nowhere on the stationary bike. Yet despite my lack of "cardio", I maintain single digit body fat percentages year round.

    Don't get me wrong... Just because I say I don't do "cardio", doesn't mean that I don't work my butt off in the gym.

    But what exactly is "cardio"? Most people would consider cardio to be exactly what I described above... pumping away mindlessly on a treadmill, riding a stationary bike, or coasting on an elliptical machine, while watching the TV screen at their state of the art gym.

    This is what I call "traditional cardio". Hmmm, no wonder the majority of people get bored with their workouts and give up after a couple months without seeing results.

    But if you look closer, "cardio" can be considered any type of exercise or activity that strengthens the cardiovascular system. I'm not going to get into anything technical like increasing your VO2 max or anything like that. To keep it simple, if it gets your heart pumping, and gets you huffin and puffin... it's cardio. I don't care if you're holding dumbbells or a barbell and everyone calls it a weight training exercise...it's still conditioning your heart.

    Let's take a look at a couple examples. Take a barbell (or dumbbell, or kettlebell) clean & press for example, which involves lifting a barbell from the floor up to shoulders, then push pressing overhead. And listen up ladies, because even though this is usually seen as a manly exercise, it doesn't matter if you're not lifting 250 lbs; if 45 lbs is challenging to you, then you will still benefit just as much.

    At first glance, most people think of the barbell C&P only as a weight training exercise or strength exercise. However, I challenge you to do a hard set of around 10-15 reps on the C&P.

    If you used a challenging enough weight, what you'll find is that your heart rate is probably up to about 80-90% of your recommended max, and you are huffing and puffing like you just ran a 100-meter sprint (which by the way, sprinting kicks the crap out of jogging any day if you want the easiest way to lose the flab fast).

    Try the same thing for a set of 20 reps of one-arm snatches or swings with each arm with a dumbbell (2 of my specialty exercises in my Truth about Six Pack Abs manual), and tell me your legs aren't burning, heart racing, and you're gasping for breath. How about trying 5 minutes straight of rotating bodyweight squats, lunges, and pushups with very little rest between. Again, notice your heart pounding, sweat pouring off of you, and chest heaving for breaths!

    Try and tell me you're not conditioning your heart with this style of training! Conventional thinking says that these are weight training or strength training exercises. However, they are fullfilling your cardio needs as well.

    Not only do you save time, but you strengthen and condition almost every muscle in your entire body with these full body exercises if you do them with enough intensity...something that can't be said for that boring stationary bike ride or treadmill jaunt while reading or watching TV.

    Seriously, if you can read or watch TV while doing any exercise, you're not concentrating enough on what you're doing, plus you're probably not working out hard enough to see any real results.
