    First things first

     

    First things first

    We need to discuss a few things first before we get into a diet or lifestyle change or even start an exercise program.

    Let me explain right here at the start that if you are suffering from any illness you need to run any changes you planning to make by your doctor. Do not leave out any of the treatment that the doctor has put you on until it is not needed any more. The doctor should tell you that you could stop the treatment. I am not a doctor.

    1 Supplements being the first not because it is the most important necessarily but after a lifetime of neglect the body needs to be given the nutrients that is lacking to function at its optimal level.

    2 We need to tackle digestive problems in order for your body to optimize the nutrients that are taking. You can call it a body cleansing if you wish.

    1 Supplements;

    All things being perfect you should not need supplements, you should be able to derive all the nutrients that your body needs from the variety of food that you eat but I hasting to say that things are not perfect any more. The soil has become poor of nutrients and thus cannot transfer nutrients to the plants, as it was, therefore the need for supplements. If you eat a wide variety of foods, your need for supplements will be less. It has become clear; the easiest way to remember is to eat by colour. By that, I mean group your fruit and vegetables in the colours that they exist in nature and make sure you eat from all the colours at least once or twice a week. If you have not done that, you need to take supplements.

    It will also be depending what you are trying to cure.

    I have done some suggestions regarding the heart and for clarity sake, I will repeat them here.

    Most of these are natural and can be incorporated in your diet.

    For lowering cholesterol levels, I suggested that you take appelcider vinegar. It is available in capsule form also. This vinegar combined with olive oil and some herbs could be used instead of ordinary vinegar to make salad dressings or you could put a few drops in your tea and have it black with a teaspoon of honey. Honey contains vitamin B. Appelcider vinegar has fat burning properties.

    Turmeric is another herb or spice, I do not know which, that is mentioned to be very good to lower cholesterol levels. On top of that, it also fights against cancer.

    Green tea also has cholesterol lowering abilities and a very strong anti oxidant. It flushes out poisons from your body. Green tea is taken black, I have not tried having it with honey, I suppose you can try, if you find it unpleasant as is.

    Guggulipid extract; this one I do not know so if any of you know, please let me know.

    Walnuts: I do not know why but it is said to be good for your heart maybe it contains omega 3 oils.

    Omega 3 oils is a must. You will find in fish, in tuna and in nuts. If you want to make sure that you get enough, rather add the capsules, available from chemists. Omega 3 should also be taken when you try to lose weight.

    Other vitamins are; B complex, C, and E.

    Lowering Homosysteine levels we have discussed under heart attack. You should find the combination of these vitamins in your chemist under the name of “Cardio dual pack”

    If you are trying to rid yourself of an Arthritic condition, the apple cider vinegar, and green tea also apply here. Ginger has been proofed to have anti-inflammatory properties.     I am sure the subject is not exhausted and that must more can be said but I believe you get the idea.

    2 The digestive system.

    Good health starts in the mouth. How to brush your teeth is taught in schools, by dentists and carried over to parents but It cannot be over emphasized how important it is to look after your teeth and mouth. Change your toothbrush every 3 months at least and if you suffered from a sore throat, throw that toothbrush away and get a new one. Plague builds up several days before it can be seen by the naked eye. Oral hygiene is a huge personal health issue. Although fruit juices are good for you it is not as friendly to your teeth it is too acidic, so dilute them but in any case clean your mouth afterwards.

    Another issue of uttermost importance is to have your bowels open. If your bowels are not open at least once daily you are constipated and needs treatment. Please do not run off to the chemist and get the appropriate medicine. I suggest you go to your super market and get that yoghurt that regulates you or get some prunes or both. Soak the prunes in hot water overnight to make them soft and have some prunes daily. Prunes are good for your bones as well. Yoghurt is a very good source of the friendly organisms that is needed to keep your digestive tract healthy. Read the enclosed documents on that subject.

    You need fibre in your diet to make you regular and keep your colon healthy, very, very important. Water is needed to keep you regular and to wash out toxins apart from keeping the cells hydrated. A detox diet is needed from time to time, at least once a year, to get rid of toxins, which builds up and is harmful to your body.

    I always use this diet when I start to feel that I need a cleansing

    I chop together English cucumber, carrots and celery and add an apple for the taste. Beetroot is cooked until tender and taken by itself as a meal. I would have paw-paw as alternate meal. Pears and pineapple are also good to burn fat. Try and stick to this for three days, drink lots of water and black rooibos tea. Have your supplements especially omega 3.

    Stress release and breathing exercises are two other important aspects that should be in place before anything else but more about that later.

    Protect your heart without OTC drugs
    Q: Does white willow bark have the same risks for gastrointestinal bleeding as aspirin?

    Both aspirin and fish oil reduce the inflammation in your cardiovascular system. But aspirin reduces your risk of heart attack by interfering with blood clotting, or platelet aggregation. Fish oil, on the other hand, reduces your risk of heart attack by literally doing a "lube job" on your platelets, so they can't stick together abnormally.

    Uninformed South Africans lack defences against parasites

    Study shows that the speed at which the brain processes information appears to be the most severely impaired in people with type 2 diabetes.

    Findings from several studies have linked type 2 diabetes with cognitive dysfunction. However, it was unclear which cognitive processes were most affected, and how undiagnosed diabetes and abnormal blood glucose (sugar) levels influenced cognitive performance.

    To investigate, researchers analysed data from 1 917 elderly men and women enrolled in the Ages Reykjavik Study - a large population-based study that ran from 2002 to 2006. The Ages study explored genetic and other risk factors for a variety of age-related conditions including cognitive impairment.

    The study subjects, who did not have dementia, included 955 non-diabetic individuals, 744 with impaired fasting glucose (a precursor to full blown diabetes), 163 with diagnosed diabetes, and 55 with undiagnosed diabetes.

    Studies show diabetics are 'slower'
    A battery of brain function tests revealed that patients with diagnosed diabetes had significantly slower mental processing speed, compared to nondiabetic subjects, Dr Jane S. Saczynski, from the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester, and colleagues report in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

    Memory performance and "executive function" - the ability to plan, schedule, and multi-task - were comparable in the two groups, except for those who had diabetes for 15 years or longer, for whom significantly poorer executive function was also observed.

    For those with undiagnosed diabetes, both processing speed and memory performance were significantly worse relative to their non-diabetic peers.

    For patients with impaired fasting glucose (pre-diabetes), cognitive performance in all three areas was on par with that seen in non-diabetic subjects.

    "Given the increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes in older adults and the complexity of disease management in these high-risk individuals, future treatment protocols should be developed with the cognitive status of patients with type 2 diabetes in mind," the research team concludes. � (Reuters Health, November 2008)

    Sleep, exercises cuts cancer risk
    Regular physical activity can significantly lower a woman's risk of developing cancer, but skimping on sleep can eliminate those gains, a study has found.

    In a long-term study of nearly 6 000 US women, researchers found that those who exercised the most had a 25% lower chance of developing cancer than those who were the least active. But among younger, physically active women, those who slept less than seven hours a night had a 47% higher risk of being diagnosed with cancer than those who regularly got a good night's rest.

    "Greater participation in physical activity has consistently been associated with reduced risk of cancer incidence at several sites, including breast and colon cancers," said James McClain, a cancer prevention fellow at the National Cancer Institute and lead author of the study.

    Lack of sleep ups heart risks too
    "Short duration sleep appears to have opposing effects of physical activity on several key hormonal and metabolic parameters, which is why we looked at how it affected the exercise/cancer risk relationship."

    It is not yet known exactly why exercise reduces cancer risks, but researchers believe it could be due to the lower body weight, improved immune function and hormone levels associated with regular physical activity. Insufficient sleep has been linked to high risks of developing a number of conditions including heart disease, obesity and diabetes but, again, researchers have not determined exactly how sleep prevents disease.

    Healthy Christmas presents to give yourself

    Everyone is always frantic at this time of the year to find the right presents for the extended family that is descending on you for Christmas Day celebrations. But what are you going to be giving yourself?

    The good news is that what you can give yourself needn't cost a lot of money.

    Stop smoking. Yes, this is difficult, but think of this � no more smelly car, no more smelly hair, no more smelly breath, the nicest seats in restaurants and no more frantic chewing of peppermints before you dare to kiss anyone. Do whatever it takes � talk to your GP about taking anti-depressants for a short while to help you over this. The long term health benefits are immeasurable.

    Get a water filter. Our tap water isn't too bad, but why settle for not too bad? Get a water filter and attach it to the kitchen tap. You'll save a fortune in bottled water.

    Join a walking club. OK, so exercise and gyms may not be your thing. A walking club caters for people of every level of fitness (or lack therof). It is structured, cheap and there is usually a professional who can answer your questions.

    Let go of what is bugging you. If you've been obsessing about someone else's problem � drinking, drugging, relationships, whatever, accept that loving someone doesn't always mean shouldering their every problem. People need to learn to take care of themselves and allowing them to do that is often the most loving thing you can do.

    Go for a checkup. Many serious conditions have no symptoms, for example hypertension and high cholesterol � have yourself tested and go for a thorough checkup.

    Watch less TV. Slouching in front of the TV for hours on end is not good for your posture and it's not good for your mind. Decide on the weekend which programmes you would like to see during the week, and stick to it. Don't get yourself into a situation where you carry on watching low quality programmes, because it's too much trouble to get up, switch off and get moving.

    Learn to forgive. Life is unfair and people can be unjust and yes, you could have been at the receiving end of some of this. If you've been pouring energy into a bottomless pit of revenge fantasies, the only one suffering is you. If you forgive people, they no longer have a hold on you.

    Drink more water. A lot of people who are fatigued and depressed are, in fact, suffering from dehydration. Make it a habit to drink a glass of water for every cup of tea or coffee you drink and another one for every glass of wine or beer.

    Go for marriage counselling. Every partnership needs a service every now and then. You wouldn't drive your car until the engine groans and black smoke belches from the exhaust, would you? Marriage counselling sorts out many problems before they become too big to handle.

    Learn to say no. You are your own first priority and you have to look after yourself first before you can care for others. If you say yes to someone when you don't have the time or the energy, you will end up resenting them and yourself, for not being able to say no.

    Migraines lower breast cancer risk
    Women who suffer from migraines may take at least some comfort in a recent, first-of-its-kind study that suggests a history of such headaches is associated with a significantly lower risk of breast cancer.

    Dr Christopher Li and colleagues at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre report these findings in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention.

    "We found that, overall, women who had a history of migraines had a 30% lower risk of breast cancer compared to women who did not have a history of such headaches," said Li, a breast-cancer epidemiologist and associate member of the Hutchinson Centre's Public Health Sciences Division.

    In particular, migraine history appeared to reduce the risk of the most common subtypes of breast cancer: those that are oestrogen-receptor and/or progesterone-receptor positive. Such tumours have oestrogen and/or progesterone receptors, or docking sites, on the surface of their cells, which makes them more responsive to hormone-blocking drugs than tumours that lack such receptors.

    Hormone levels play a role
    The biological mechanism behind the association between migraines and breast cancer is not fully known, but Li and colleagues suspect that it has to do with fluctuations in levels of circulating hormones.

    "Migraines seem to have a hormonal component in that they occur more frequently in women than in men, and some of their known triggers are associated with hormones," Li said. "For example, women who take oral contraceptives � three weeks of active pills and one week of inactive pills to trigger menstruation � tend to suffer more migraines during their hormone-free week," he said. Conversely, pregnancy � a high-oestrogen state � is associated with a significant decrease in migraines. "By the third trimester of pregnancy, 80% of migraine sufferers do not have these episodes," he said. Oestrogen is known to stimulate the growth of hormonally sensitive breast cancer.

    While this study represents the first of its kind to look at a potential connection between migraines and breast cancer, Li and colleagues have data from two other studies that in preliminary analyses appear to confirm these findings, he said.

    New avenues to explore
    "While these results need to be interpreted with caution, they point to a possible new factor that may be related to breast-cancer risk. This gives us a new avenue to explore the biology behind risk reduction. Hopefully this could help stimulate other ideas and extend what we know about the biology of the disease."

    For the study, the researchers combined data from two population-based, case-control studies of 3 412 Seattle-area postmenopausal women, 1 938 of whom had been diagnosed with breast cancer and 1 474 of whom had no history of breast cancer, who served as a comparison group. Information on migraine history was based on self-report and was limited to migraines that had been diagnosed by a physician or other health professional. � (EurekAlert!)

    Why the brain slows at 40
    The brain may explain why people slow down as they get older, starting at age 40. How fast you can throw a ball, run or swerve a steering wheel depends on how speedily brain cells fire off commands to muscles. Fast firing depends on good insulation for your brain's wiring. Now new US research suggests that in middle age, even healthy people begin to lose some of that insulation in a motor-control part of the brain - at the same rate that their speed subtly slows.

    That helps explain why "it's hard to be a world-class athlete after 40," concludes Dr George Bartzokis, a neurologist at the University of California, Los Angeles, who led the work.

    And while that may sound depressing, keep reading. The research points to yet another reason to stay physically and mentally active: An exercised brain may spot fraying insulation quicker and signal for repair cells to get to work.

    How the new research works
    To Bartzokis, the brain is like the Internet. Speedy movement depends on bandwidth, which in the brain is myelin, a special sheet of fat that coats nerve fibres. Healthy myelin - good thick insulation wound tightly around those nerve fibres - allows prompt conduction of the electrical signals the brain uses to send commands. Higher-frequency electrical discharges, known as "actional potentials," speed movement - any movement, from a basketball rebound to a finger tap.

    Consider someone like Michael Jordan. "The circuitry that made him a great basketball player was probably myelinated better than most other mortals," Bartzokis notes. But while myelin builds up during adolescence, when does production slow enough that we fall behind in the race to repair fraying, older insulation?

    Enter the new research. First, Bartzokis recruited 72 healthy men, ages 23 to 80, to perform a simple test: How fast they tapped an index finger. Anyone can do this; it doesn't depend on strength or fitness. Researchers counted how many taps the men made in 10 seconds, recording the two fastest of 10 attempts. Then, brain scans checked for myelin in need of repair in the region that orders a finger to tap.

    Strikingly, tapping speed and myelin health both peaked at age 39. Then both gradually declined with increasing age, the researchers reported last month in the journal Neurobiology of Aging.

    That doesn't mean the rest of the brain is equally affected. Bartzokis has some evidence that myelin starts to fray a decade or so later in brain regions responsible for cognitive functions - higher-level thinking - than in motor-control areas.

    Goal is to fight Alzheimer's disease
    So back to his example of Jordan, who last played professionally at age 40: "Even he started getting older. That circuitry started breaking down a little," contends Bartzokis. "He can become Michael Jordan the big-shot businessman ... but not be Michael Jordan the super-duper basketball player anymore."

    Bartzokis is not looking to build a better athlete. His ultimate goal is to fight Alzheimer's disease. The connection: Building memories requires high-frequency electrical bursts, too, and Bartzokis' earlier research suggests an Alzheimer's-linked gene may thwart myelin repair.

    But the new research has broader implications because it sheds light on normal ageing, says Dr Zoe Arvanitakis, a neurologist at Chicago's Rush University Medical Centre.

    "We knew at some age you peak and there's a sense it would disintegrate as you grow older. But we didn't have a sense of where that age would be," says Arvanitakis, who next wants to see if myelin and cognitive functions show a similar trajectory.

    Bartzokis' research supports a recent report from German scientists, that with age comes a weakening of the system that's supposed to repair broken myelin, adds Dr Bradley Wise of the National Institute on Aging.

    "Any disruption in these neural circuits and networks will have problems for functioning," says Wise, who says the two reports are spurring increased interest into myelin's role in ageing. Until recently, most myelin research has focused on multiple sclerosis, where myelin does not gradually degrade but disappears. � (Sapa, November 2008)

    If you don't get enough sleep at night, be sure to drink a strong cup of coffee before trying to remember important facts � otherwise your sleep-deprived mind will play tricks with your memory, according to a team of German researchers.

    Lack of sleep impairs the mind's ability to recall facts efficiently. Still in a dream-like state, the mind jumbles memory so that you may claim with high confidence to remember things that in fact never happened, typically due to strong semantic associations with actually encoded events, say the researchers at Luebeck University, Heinrich Heine University in Dusseldorf and the universities of Geneva and Zurich.

    In other words, sleep deprivation means the mind has not finished sorting and storing memories. It is a bit like when your computer warns you that some unsaved files may be lost, if you reboot your computer without waiting for it to save everything first.

    But a good jolt of caffeine is often sufficient to speed up the "saving files" process so that memories are all sorted and clear, the researchers write in the journal Popular Library of Science One (PLOS One).

    Sleep good for memory
    Sleep is known to provide optimal neurobiological conditions for consolidation of memories for long-term storage, whereas sleep deprivation acutely impairs retrieval of stored memories.

    The German researchers found that sleep deprivation at the time of memory retrieval resulted in false memories. Test subjects who had a good night's sleep were able to remember new facts perfectly. Those who had not had enough sleep remembered "false facts," the researchers found.

    They also found that caffeine prevents the inaccurate memory retrievals.

    "Sleep deprivation at retrieval, but not sleep following learning, critically enhanced false memories of theme words. This effect was abolished by caffeine administration prior to retrieval," writes Dr Susanne Diekelmann of the Department of Neuro-Endocrinology, University of Luebeck in Germany.

    Methodology
    Subjects were divided into three groups and were given new facts to learn. Two groups learned in the evening and were tested the next morning, after they had either slept or stayed awake during the intervening night. The third group learned in the morning and was tested in the same evening after normal daytime wakefulness.

    The test subjects had learned lists of semantically associated words, such as "night", "dark", "coal" but without the strongest common denominator or theme word - such as "black".

    Those who were sleep-deprived later insisted that the word "black", for example, had been on the list when in fact it had not been on the list. Those who had "slept on it" correctly stated that "black" was not on the list.

    Frequent false memories
    "Subjects of the 'night wake' group, who were acutely sleep deprived at retrieval testing, exhibited significantly more false memories than subjects in the two other groups," Diekelmann writes.

    Those subjects falsely recognised 88% of the theme words, whereas after sleep and diurnal wakefulness false memory rate was negligible, she writes.

    "Importantly, subjects did not produce more false memories in the 'night sleep' group than in the 'day wake' group, which would be expected, if consolidation processes during post-learning sleep were critical for the development of false memories," the author points out.

    A good strong dose of caffeine cleared the cobwebs from the minds of the sleep-deprived test subjects, so that they remembered correctly that "black" had not been on the list, contrary to their initial memories - false memories. � (Sapa-dpa)
